Free merchant checklist

Check the product facts AI shopping systems can work with.

Review descriptions, identifiers, variants, images, policies, and structured output before adding more automation. The goal is accurate, reusable catalog data—not a guaranteed ranking.

Start with source data

Why catalog readiness comes first

Shopify advises merchants to keep product information complete and well structured for Shopify Catalog and agentic storefronts. That includes the facts used to describe, classify, compare, and sell each product.

Eight checks

Audit one product without special tools

Work from the Shopify product record and the live product page. Verify each fact; do not fill a field merely to make the record look complete.

Your verified progress

0 of 8 checks

A checked item means you inspected the source record yourself. It is not an automated quality score.

  1. Product identity

Use a distinct title and a factual description.

A machine reader should be able to identify the product, its purpose, and its important attributes without guessing. Remove template fragments, placeholder labels, and unsupported claims.

  2. Classification

Fill in product type, vendor, and relevant categories.

Keep classification consistent across similar products. A blank or catch-all category makes filtering, mapping, and catalog maintenance harder.

  3. Identifiers

Check SKU, barcode, GTIN, and variant identifiers.

Use legitimate identifiers only. Do not invent a barcode or GTIN to make a field look complete; leave unavailable facts empty and document why.

  4. Offers

Verify price, availability, options, and variant labels.

Confirm that each purchasable variant has an understandable option combination and that the displayed offer matches the product record.

  5. Images

Give informative product images useful alternative text.

Describe the image when that description helps someone understand the product. Avoid keyword stuffing and do not repeat decorative text that adds no information.

  6. Structured facts

Store reusable attributes in supported metafields.

Materials, dimensions, care instructions, compatibility, and other repeated facts are easier to validate when they are structured consistently instead of buried in prose.

  7. Policies

Publish accurate shipping and return information.

Only expose policy facts that are true for the merchant. A structured-data block should not add a shipping promise, return window, rating, or review count that the store cannot verify.

  8. Machine-readable output

Compare visible product facts with generated structured data.

Check that JSON-LD and other machine-readable surfaces reflect the same title, offer, availability, images, identifiers, and policies that a shopper sees.

Manual or assisted

Use automation after you trust the checks

Manual review is enough when…

  • You have a small catalog or one urgent product.
  • You already know which facts need verification.
  • You want to establish an internal content standard.

An audit tool helps when…

  • You need the same checks across many products.
  • You want prioritized evidence before editing.
  • You need a review-before-write workflow.

Optional next step

Run the same review across your catalog

GEO Agent audits supported Shopify product fields, explains its heuristic, and stages description changes for review. It does not promise rankings, recommendations, traffic, or sales.
